About the Count

Help with the website and App

In 2019 Australia counted nearly 3.4 million birds in seven days!  Follow the link here to find out what birds made the Top 10 in 2019. Collecting a dataset like the one from the Aussie Backyard Bird Count is only possible with your help, particularly as this is the only way for Aussie Backyard Bird Count to get access to areas they are not usually able to survey i.e. in your very own backyard.

As well as helping ecologists to track large-scale biodiversity trends, backyard bird counting gives people the opportunity to connect with their natural environment whilst gaining a greater appreciation of our unique feathery friends. If counting birds for one week every year in October doesn’t seem enough and you would be keen to submit bird surveys all year round, check out the bird monitoring programs – Birds in Backyards and Birdata.
