The leisurely Sunday morning bike ride would usually be about 20 kms at a leisurely pace, mostly along safe off road bike paths with a half way rest/coffee/refreshment break. Pace is determined by the slowest rider and no one ever gets left behind.
Starting points would vary from week to week with locations in Bundoora, Epping and South Morang. The rides would start at 9.00am and take about 2 hours including the rest break.
These rides would be conducted jointly by U3A and the Whittlesea Bicycle Users Group (BUG), so not everyone on the ride would necessarily be a U3A member. I would be there on most occasions as either the ride leader or mentor. If I was unavailable, an experienced U3A member would be there. Several Thursday U3A bike riders have already agreed to lead an occasional Sunday ride. All regular Thursday U3A bike riders are also members of the BUG.
http://www.whittleseabug.org.au/rides/upcoming-rides About BUG. – It was set up 6 years ago by the City of Whittlesea council as an advisory group and to conduct community group bike rides. It is the councils main contact point with the local cycling community on matters pertaining to bike paths and other cycling infrastructure. It also conducts 4 weekly group bike rides catering for different standards of riders. It has members who are nationally accredited level 1 cycling trainers who conduct cycling clinics.
The BUG will be conducting a free beginner/refresher cycling clinic on Saturday 26 November where any U3A member would be welcome without any cost or obligation.
This activity will commence Sunday 23 October and be held weekly through summer (except Christmas and New Year’s Day) and term 1 next year when its success should be evaluated. You can enrol online in Sunday Bike Ride or advise Program Coordinator, Afroditi, in the office on 9464 1339
